The story takes place in a small mountain village and the hero is the priest, Abbe Roche, whose life is changed by the arrival of the Count de Manteigney and his pretty wife. The author was a painter and his artist's eye is readily apparent in the beautiful descriptions of scenery and the vivid characters. The title refers to a medicinal spring that is discovered on the Manteigney estate. Naturally, the Abbe falls in love with the Countess and...well...you'll just have to read the book!
