The premise of this book is that there is an inner logic or structure for each discipline and the pedagogy for the discipline must take that structure into account in order to provide the type of spiral curriculum that enables students to build deeper, more complex understandings of the content and skills associate with that discipline. Understanding the structure and providing instruction that helps novices quickly begin to think like the discipline experts is how the book defines effective teaching.
