This book does not fit the typical categories. It is not primarily a field guide, or detailed reference book. It is not primarily an observation book of stories watching nature. It is a first attempt at a guidebook-reference book on these creatures, with a few chapters on general lifestyles and behaviors of some fireflies, and a few personal experiences watching fireflies. There are no range maps in this first book. Genera are mentioned alphabetically. there is as of the present, not much known on the species level so this book is a start.

The foldout of blink sequence is very interesting, and helpful in a general way.
Probably the strong point of the book is its general discussion of some of the firefly behavior and some general discussion of field observing, along with the section labeled "Frequently Asked Questions" .

I look forward to a more expanded edition of this book someday, as the knowledge builds on these unique creatures, allowing the blink chart and description to expand, perhaps to the species level.

Besides acknowledgements, there is an appendix with the Selangor Declaration, photo credits, permissions, glossary, bibliography, online resources, index of common names, and subject index.… (more)
