- Born to a family of minor English gentry, Moreton Frewen earned the nickname 'Mortal Ruin', due to the disastrous financial schemes in which he lost money both for himself and his friends. For a period, he ran the Powder River Cattle Company in Wyoming. He had an interest in currency reform, and advocated bimetallism. He served briefly as an MP.
He married Clara Jerome, daughter of the American millionaire Leonard Jerome, and so was related by marriage to Winston Churchill (son of his sister-in-law Jenny), and Sir Shane Leslie (son of his sister-in-law Leonie).
