3332. Grand Delusion / Stalin and the German Invasion of Russia, by Gabriel Gorodetsky (read July 30, 2000). This is straight history, and to my surprise I thought told me more than I wanted to know about a most interesting subject. I guess I would prefer my history a little more "spiced up" than is this competent book.

This substantial diary of the Soviet ambassador to the UK 1932-1943 is an interesting read if you are interetsed in the Stalin era. It is only a fascinating read if you are interested in the diplomatic relations and foreiign affairs policies of the two countries; a huge proportion of the book is taken up with these issues rather than anything more personal, although there are some fascinating glimpses from his meetings with various figures like Shaw, the Webbs, Lloyd George etc . There are some reflections on British life, but not many. Really this is most significant as an important source document for historians of the period. There is an extensive commentary which puts the diary into context and shows how Maisky was often swimming against the tide.… (more)
