A XIXth century mystery novel set in France (and maybe Belgium), with many french expressions (not a problem) and an english that I am not used to.

Not so mysterious in fact, the only murder dates from 15 years ago (and the culprit has confessed), the thefts are not real, duels are not to death. Inspecteur Joly has not much to do. A pleasant read however.

Short stories set in France of a vaguely detective nature. Diane is a Frenchwoman (daughter and wife of soldiers) and the first story, which is the most arresting, finds her fighting a duel to save her own honor. Stories also cluster around a mysterious French countess and a prosaic Parisian detective. Fun.
