Riveting! The love story of a relationship between father and daughter plus the life story of the author's father, an American Hero. As a historical researcher myself, I enjoyed the detailed history of Col. Harold McNeese's brave service as a B-24 and B-29 pilot in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, A fascinating history of the time and a wonderful tribute!

This was an addicting, interesting, unusual book. Halfway through, at the finish of WW2, the book changed from an intense tale of war to become a bit of a life's diary of the author. Not that that was a bad thing in that the remainder of the book became a page-turner as the first had already been. It's just that the experiences during WW2 were riveting.

I became a huge fan of Mac McNeese over the many pages. The fact that he had completed 83 combat missions after being shot down and surviving on his wits for 3 weeks in enemy territory during his very first mission tells a great deal about the man of the story. His later accomplishments seem almost expected.

The reader becomes deeply involved in his life as well as his family through the recounting of events and ultamately there is palpable sadness at the end.

A great read - i give it 5 stars.

I also grew up in the 1950s and my father was also known to his many friends and working colleagues as Mac. I am also in the Pacific but in the other hemisphere. This book is written in two parts. Sherry has provided an excellent biography of her father’s WWII experiences in Part 1 including the historical overview of the events taking place in the Pacific Theatre of War providing the reader with context as it related to MAC. Historical students please note. However in Part 2, she has really excelled in describing the times in which she grew up, completely different but not dissimilar to those in which I grew up half a world away in a country very kindly referred to by MAC on Page 168 (in Part 1). I was so able to relate to the whole story as it unfolded throughout, even the almost forgotten Korean police incident and the disastrous Vietnam era. The whole biography has been carefully woven together in a narrative that flows quite naturally. Congratulations to the author and I commend everyone who reads this to post a review. I received this book from LibraryThing for an honest review and I award it 5 stars.… (more)
