I freely chose to review this ARC and was riveted to my seat as I rapidly read the first book of the series where gods tamper with other beings of the supernatural! Some serial killer is killing minor witches in a gruesome way and it's up the detective Assefa Berber of the FBI's secrets division of paranormal investigations and Sanura Williams, a psychology professor to locate the killer. Not only is she a professor but unknown to humans, she is a fire witch! The pair find a spark of lust show more between them and have to learn to trust the other if they want to find the killer, but each is afraid that when their secrets are unveiled that the other will run! Now, I have to read book 2 show less
What a stunning book! This underwater fantasy depicts joyous, strong, intellectual, talented, powerful black mermaids surrounded by sea creatures and treasures. But it also contains mermen with one particularly gorgeous illustration of a merman with a baby on his chest. As a bonus, there are thought-provoking quotes sprinkled throughout and a few fun word puzzles at the end. I'm afraid I won't do justice to the art when I start coloring, but at the same time I'm itching to begin. This is show more book three in N.D. Jones's "Fantasy in Black" series for adults. As a school librarian, my hope is that she will bring similar, much-needed books such as this one to elementary students sometime in the future. show less

First opening this book I felt incredibly excited. The language was very painting, the setting was detailed while not droning on and the character immediately felt real. Within the first few pages, I thought I knew how the book was going to go, high suspense, constant action. The begrudging love between the main characters a subplot added simply for the sex appeal, simply a trope that has been overdone. However I was pleasantly surprised, while the book was indeed high suspense, none of my show more other predictions was correct. The book had a good balance between action filed scenes and romantic/slice of life scenes. The love between Issa and Serwa is frankly one of the most real relationships I've seen in any sort of media. They seem to truly love each other, but they still have their problems.

Mrs Jones has a very unique writing style, she has a talent for sneaking in information that isn't common knowledge without interrupting the flow of the story. I learned the hierarchy and different types of angels in the span of a few pages, while a conversation and an inner monologue were going on and it still felt cohesive. She also managed to put humour into a sex scene without making the sex scene feel humorous, which I formerly believed was impossible. In addition, the writing is very passionate and personal, at times it almost felt like you were intruding on someone's life.

I would have given this book five stars if not for one thing, the fantasy part was not that complex, I had a hard time really getting into it. Even though the book is mainly a romance, not a fantasy the whole plot rested on the revenge on O´Leary.

In conclusion, it’s a good book, the writing is amazing but the more action-filled scenes lack the passion and enthusiasm that exists in the rest of the book. I would probably re-read this book.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Book #3 in the "Fantasy in Black" coloring book series, THE BEAUTY OF BLACK MERMAIDS features seventeen beautifully rendered illustrations and eight pages of inspirational quotes for you to color in. The drawings are lovely and imaginative, rich with intricate detail that make them extra challenging. The paper is a medium grade, and each page is one-sided, ensuring the integrity of show more each finished product. The underwater scenes are spectacular - there are sunken pirates ships mermen napping in giant clam shells while cradling their babies, mermaid queens perched on their thrones, and mermaids playing with dragons. Definitely one of the most enchanting adult coloring books I've come across. I only wish there were more drawings! show less
