A scream, in the same genre as CAPTIONS COURAGEOUS, of which Kapplow was the co-Author. Same schtick: classic works of art get madly logical captions. The cover is perfectly representative. We see Meissonier's famous history-painting of Bonaparte's retreat from Moscow. In front of a somewhat bedraggled gang of commanders and aides, we see Napoleon riding indomitable and upright, despite the circumstances. His right arm is crossed over his chest, his hand tucked into his coat in his characteristic fashion. The caption: "Do you think I should go back for the other glove?"… (more)

A classic of 1950s humour. What a great time that was: Bob & Ray, MAD magazine, Ernie Kovacs, Groucho on TV . . . and these crazy guys. The schtick is very simple: out captions onto famous works of art. Example: Andrea Mantegna famous painting of Judith holding the head of Holofernes -- with the tag-line : "I like to make a clean break to an affair." Or again, one of my all-time faves: Botticelli's BIRTH IOF VENUS, with the nymph bringing a robe to cover the gloriously nude young goddess, with the caption "Slip into this; it's a raid."
