About the Author

John Kemper has been a birder ever since he was a Boy Scout, has been to all corners of North America to see birds, and has accumulated a North American life list of 722 species. In his "other life" as he calls it, he worked for many years as an engineer in the scientific instruments and computer show more industries, became a professor at the University of California, Davis, and served for 14 years there as dean of engineering. He has a doctorate in structural mechanics from the University of Colorado. Since retiring from the university, he has served as president of Yolo Audubon Society, and is currently active in the Rogue Valley Audubon Society, where he serves as secretary of the Jackson County Checklist Committee. He is the author of two books about birds and wildlife: Birding Northern California, and Discovering Yolo County Wildlife.
