The Flying Bull and Other Tales by Watson Kirkconnell
Odd book. Sort of Canterbury Tales in the style of Hiawatha. Seemed a bit naff when I started, but soon grew on me and I really enjoyed it. The individual tales were perfect to read in bed just before lights out. Engaging but not too stimulating and great to drift away from the canadian wastes into dreams. I really like the illustrations by Jack McLaren. Only missed 4 stars because I didn't like the last (The Poet - Blake?) tale.
Interesting survey of controbutions by European ethnic groups --adopts a kind of vrebverse approach, begining with the Eastern Slavs (Great Russian, Ukraiians) and working through most groups ending with the English and Lowland Scots. It does inxclude the Jews as a group though it inaccurately describes Yiddish as broken-down Hewbrewv adulterated with loan words (instead of a German dialect with Hebrew loan words)/
