Mark Kukis left a job as a White House correspondent for United Press International shortly after September 11, 2001, to cover the war in Afghanistan as a freelance writer. Beginning in October of that year, Kukis spent several months in Pakistan and Afghanistan covering the conflict, including show more stays in Jalalabad and Tora Bora to report on fighting there for the online magazine Salon.com. He lives in Washington, D.C. show less
