A classic of adventure and archaeology. Layard doesn't just dig up Babylonian civilization, he also negotiates with the local tribes to help him do it and then to get much of it shipped back by barge to London and the British Museum. Cloth binding embossed with a winged god with the body of a lion and the face of a man.

A great adventure story, a travel masterpiece, and one of the classics of archaeology, all captured in a well-done book with numerous illustrations, fine engravings and foldout maps and illustrations. Embossed with gold on green cloth, chips at top and bottom of spine.
