Tom Huffman is Professor Emeritus of Archaeology at the University of Wttwatersrand, Johannesburg. Wonderful photos and helpful illustrations, written with care and clarity, and so much more accessible than Huffman’s tome on the Iron Age, but a deeply frustrating reading experience. This is because so little is retrieved of the people behind the stones - their identity, their stories, their culture. We know much more about Assyrians 4,000 years ago than these African societies 400 years ago - and much of that is from the Portuguese, who built the first christian church in Zimbabwe in 1560 at Luanze in Mashonaland East.… (more)
