- Short biography
- Brigitte Massin was born in Roubaix, France. She was interested in music from an early age and was self-taught in musical history. She became a well-known music journalist and critic, and wrote columns for Matin de Paris and Républican Lorraine. She also researched and wrote important biographical works on classical and romantic composers, some together with her husband Jean Massin, a fellow musicologist. She specialized in Schubert, Mozart, and Beethoven. She received the inaugural Prix Alfred-Verdaguer in 1978 from the Académie française for her book Franz Schubert (1977). In 1989, she published Olivier Messiaen: Une poétique du merveilleux, a book of interviews with composer Olivier Messiaen. She was a longtime member of the Syndicat professionnel de la critique théâtrale et musicale (Professional Union of Theater and Music Critics), which she served as vice-president for music. She also was president of the association Presse musicale internationale. Her daughter Béatrice Massin is a choreographer and specialist in Baroque dance.
