A Cartoon Saloon animated film (Wildcard, 2020).

The daughter of a hunter meets a magic wolf girl.

C+ (Okay).

It's nice to look at, but the story is extremely predictable. I felt like I'd already seen it a dozen times. It doesn't help that the plot is almost entirely built around People Not Listening To Each Other, which is a tedious trope.

A gorgeous, wonderful film. While I very much enjoyed both of Cartoon Saloon's previous Irish folklore inspired animated films, I found they were just slightly ponderous for my tastes. Not so with 'Wolfwalkers', which moves at just the right pace. And the visuals, already so beautiful in the previous films, if possible reach new heights of excellence here. Feast for the eyes-wise, 2D animation continues to mop the floor with the digital 3D models, and 'Wolfwalkers' might be just about the best example I can think of.

The story is well told and engrossing, following a young English girl who has followed her father to Ireland, working for the English occupation. There, the domineering Lord Protector has tasked her father with eradicating the wolves in the forest surrounding their city. But then the girl meets another one, who lives in the wild, and who becomes a wolf herself, at night.

Warmly recommended. The best animated film experience I've had since LAIKA's 'Kubo and the Two Strings', and there is no higher praise.

Stunning visuals and with a cool premise and story, but the execution is a good bit too slow and meandering to properly grip me. Still quite an accomplishment, and recommended to any fan of animation and children's fantasy.
