While not a bad study part of my problem with this book is that I've read enough about the Confederacy's throw of converting a regional identity and a commitment to human bondage as an organizing principle into a nation and a state so that there's no way this work can seem all that fresh to me. That said the author's efforts to put the experience of American social and political turbulence into a world context of the creation of new national identities is quite valuable. Quigley also enlightens one on the reality that commitment to the Union was always essentially conditional to the people who became committed secessionists.… (more)
