This is the best textbook on the viola and its builders and players I have come across.
The format is a little different than volume 1. The forward describes volume 2 as a supplement but it seems more like a replacement in most ways. There are many more photos and illustrations of early violas, along with their dimensions and owners.
Part 2, Research is not covered in volume 1. It is a history of efforts to adjust the tone of the instrument for optimum playing conditions.
There is also a map of early viols builder locations that is not present in volume 1.
All viola players would appreciate this volume two of the viola history.

Everything about the viola and its builders and players is in here. All viola players would learn something from this book, either techniques, or the people who played the instrument, or the people nearby who are playing it, or simply the detailed history of the instruments evolution through time and geography.

The author uses seventeen chapters, of which sixteen are devoted to the instrument and player's history. The last chapter is thoughts on the future of the viola and its players.

There are then two appendixes that contain the names of many who have played the viola, going back to its origin. All viola players should read this book. It is an ideal text.… (more)
