Nora Lee’s hand is marked and she sees the spirits of dead people. As she moves through grade school, she develops a close friendship with Joanne that helps her survive the abuse she experiences in her dysfunctional family. Her interactions with the invisible people, neighbors, and friends only highlight the awkwardness of pubescent immaturity as she moves into teenage angst and young adult sexual conflicts.
