While having knowledge of John Mitchel this is the first biography I acquired of him. It is a very well written book. I was never aware of the story of Mitchel's wife which is an interesting tale in itself. His struggle as a Fenian, his turbulent relations with his colleagues and his time in imprisonment in Australia are all explored. Following his escape to the US he embarks on a new path and ultimately becomes a supporter of the Confederacy. Two sons die in its cause during the Civil War. He will subsequently be elected an MP for a brief term in Ireland before his death.… (more)

What a life and like all lives, rich or poor there is some good and some bad. Family wealth and privilege is what obviously set this story apart.
