- Pearl Cohen graduated from Radcliffe College in 1937, and married Louis Schiff, a podiatrist, with whom she had two children. She worked as a proofreader for the Boston Globe for many years, retiring in 1978. She also wrote book reviews for the paper. Her first novel, Scollay Square, about an affair between a sailor and a young woman in Boston's old red-light district, caused a sensation when it was published in 1952 and became a bestseller. Her second book, Walk a Narrow Line (1966), was published in the UK after being rejected by American publishers. Mrs. Schiff worked on an autobiography and taught a memoir-writing class for the Council on Aging in Sharon, Massachusetts.
