I began this book thinking it would be a typical paranormal book however typical it is not. It is definitely one of the most unique stories I have read. I loved the sharp, sarcastic wit and humor. My favorite! It also touched on some interesting issues such as spirituality but in a light way which contributed to the story. I can't imagine what the author will have up her sleeve for the sequel but I can't wait to find out.

Don't pay attention to the unfortunate cover, this book is funny, smart and sad at the same time, and certainly worth your time.

It works, simply because each of us can relate to Lilith. She is thirty something, recently divorced, saddled with a daughter whom she loves dearly, a distantly related hellion niece who accidentally burned her house, and a beautiful step-sister, who can't grow up and get a job.

Lilith is a substitute teacher, out of work, with bills piling up and credit cards maxing out. She is on the verge of being broke. Until the day she dies.

Transported to Hell, which is appropriately a big bureaucratic machine, Lilith finds out that one of her ancestors made a deal with the devil to escape death. One female of her line will always carry a succubus demon in her, and now Lilith's mom died and it's her turn.

Horrified, Lilith is sent back and has to struggle with her own morality and sense of right while Hell sends her on little tasks of seducing humans to the dark side. She might not need to have sex with them, but she tips the scales by her words or actions, so their souls will go to Hell.

Of course, Lilith is a disaster despite the help of a gorgeous William Darcy, an incubus and a friend of her mother. Allowing her demon a free reign will help her family survive and escape the bankruptcy and starvation, but her consciousness keeps messing up until enraged Hell gives her an ultimatum - do something BIG for them or they'll make her daughter a succubus instead...

A lovely and easy, bittersweet read.

Starla had always imagined that becoming a vampire would make her popular, glamorous and wealthy. But after she and her best friend, Jordan, become undead, Starla realizes one thing: a vampire’s life sucks.
Since there’s no turning back, she tries to make the best of her situation, but it isn’t easy. Especially not after her friend abandons her to serve the oldest, most powerful vampire in the city. Or when she gets on the bad side of a gang of vampires who’ve taken over the zoo. Or when she meets a really cute boy and ends up falling in love, only to find out that there’s a major problem…she’s a vampire, and he’s a vampire killer.

The author, Michelle Scott had emailed me about doing a review for her book. I was surprised, excited that she contacted me to do so! I really did not read the description before diving into this book. Now to the review:

Okay hoping I'm working this spoiler thing right! I thought that her descriptions were so very beautifully done, and were very orginal. When the character was feeling something there was a comparison that fit very well. I really enjoyed the humorous yet cynical bond between Starlet who is the main character and her new relationship with the tiny child vampire Maybel. I thought that the author had different quirks for her vampires. That her main character was different in teh aspect that she wanted to become a vampire then became one that she realized that this new life style wasn't fully what she thought it would be. I liked seeing that the character realized the mistakes of her actions. I wish the main character, Starlet, was a smig more stronger with her personality since she was able to crush a table with her hands I don't mean strength. I liked the the vampires were seen as beasts and could beome lazy. However with all this good things I did have a couple of problems. I wish that there was a chapter or a preface before chapter one. I kind of just felt a little dropped into the story, a little too much was left to let grow. There was a couple of typos in the story. I almost wish this story was in first person to get a little more in Starlet's head, since her, her best friend Jordan who she is searching and trying to understand throughout the book, in addition to the love interest Mercer are all growing a little bit. The characters still seemed a little flip floppy. I read this almost all in one day so it is a quick fun read, it takes a little bit to pick up, but the ending was interesting. I literally laughed though when Starlet is beign stubborn and trying to avoid drinking blood from a human and tries a rat, I just thought back to the movie "Interview with a Vampire".

Review:

"A Christmas Peril" by Michelle Scott was a good short paranormal novel about Cassandra is going to holiday party, however, she did not know that their would be a bunch of vampires at this party that would be wanting to 'steal her soul.' Why had she been even invited to this party? Well, Cassandra thought that since Hedda (head of the Widderstrom grieve) had invited her nothing would go wrong. But the question was had Hedda invited her? Hedda was the held of this vampire group and were their someone at this party that didn't care of this situation? While at this party did Cassandra and her boyfriend Isaiah realize that maybe they hadn't been invited by Hedda. Strange things started happening....would these vampire let them out of here? When they were told by Hedda that they had better leave the party....as they were leaving only to be told that there car had been vandalized .... well this is the time I will say you must pick up this read to see out this author brings it all out to the reader. Will Cassandra and Isaiah be able to leave this party safely? What is this Edith (vampire) trying to do with Cassandra and why was Edith saying this was for Cornelius? How does the 'Holy Water; come into play? Why had Cassandra attacked Cornelius? Will Edith get away with what she had planned? What part did Cornelius play in all of this? This and many other questions will be answered in this fast pace short read. I really liked reading "A Christmas Peril" and I am sure you will to if you like paranormal reads. Yes, I would definitely recommend this read to you.… (more)
