A Voyage Round the World with Captain James Cook in… by Anders Sparrman
Sparrman's journal is quite fascinating. We learn about the daily life and customs aboard an exploratory expedition at the end of the 18th century and get an insight into the experience of "discovering" parts of the world as yet unknown to Europeans. Much of the book details the explorers' encounters with natives, the customs of those peoples, and the delicacy of maintaining peaceful relations across barriers of language and culture. Sparrman was a scientist and his manuscript can come-off as a little dry in places, but the subject matter keeps things interesting.
