Short biography: Op 26 juni 1900 werd op het oude Stationsplein 11, nu ongeveer hoek Molengracht-Berkelkade, een van de bekendste Zutphenezen geboren: Jo Spier, zoon van de joodse manufacturen- en kledingverkoper Isidore Spier en zijn uit Brabant afkomstige vrouw Selina Elias.

Jo Spier ging in Zutphen naar het gymnasium en vertrok in 1919 naar Amsterdam. Daar werd hij tekenaar en illustrator. Hij was landelijk zeer bekend door zijn bijna dagelijkse tekeningen in De Telegraaf en Elseviers Weekblad. In de oorlog werd hij meerdere malen opgepakt, met zijn vrouw Tineke, twee zonen en een dochter. Het gezin eindigde de oorlog in concentratiekamp Theresiënstadt, maar overleefde en keerde terug naar Nederland. Daarna emigreerden ze in 1950 naar Amerika waar Jo, maar ook zijn zoon Peter, carrière maakten als illustrator.

In 1975 schonk hij zijn hele archief aan het Stedelijk Museum Zutphen, waar het nu een van de kerncollecties is. Jo Spier overleed in Amerika in 1978.

The creation by Jo Spier

The handwritten text is from the Jerusalem Bible; since it is written all in capital letters, I don't know which words should be capitalized. There are dinosaurs among the animals, but only one woman in the next picture of two men in a rowboat, a man milking a cow in a meadow, and a girl with a gaggle of geese. The text for this picture starts, "God said, 'Let us make man in our own image, in the likeness of ourselves,' with no mention of male and female. Having found some of the Jerusalem show more Bible on Google Books, I see that other words are also missing, such as "be fruitful and multiply."
