A huge coffee table reference book, The Music Makers is a western music history survey from the earliest written music in 1000 AD to modern times (1979). Brief biographies of hundreds of composers and musicians are accompanied by photographs and art, essays about historical context and the development of musical instruments. It's a good reference, and a very interesting book to browse.
