Until recently, most books about firearms silencers or suppressors have been of two types. There were the scientific and technical reports, and then there were the DIY instructions for making a silencer from a pop bottle and some duct tape.
Now many US states have eliminated or greatly reduced their restrictions on suppressors. It still necessary to get a Federal license in these states, which takes months and a few hundred dollars. However, now there is a large legal market for suppressors.
Sweeney’s book is a good overview of what is commercially available. It will help the novice to decide what to buy and how to maintain it. Even if you aren’t in a state where you can buy a silencer, this is a good overview of the state of the art. Most other books deal with historical examples, unobtainable military suppressors, or illegal devices to be cobbled together.
