Historical fiction is one of my favorites, but this book was underwhelming to say the least.
There was an intriguing plot, but the pace killed it. The pages went on and on and on with little to no action. It was war time, but there was hardly any danger? Not to mention the parts of the annoying little brother... No one needed to hear his story. He was weak and naive and just a terrible character as a whole. Not once did I feel he gained maturity or bravery and I thought with time, a show more progression would show.
I did like Peggy and Henryk... Actually I craved more of them. I needed more mystery and more romance. I needed more emotion and more gut wrenching parts. The ending was solid, but still... I could have seen an accidental death or more of a conclusion than what we got.
All in all, this book felt half done or not thought out properly. I wish I could say I enjoyed it, but I didn't. At this time, I do not recommend it. show less

Exciting, moving and detailed. I've always been interested in the Spanish Civil War and this book really brings it to life, wrapping it around a love story. Left me wanting to find out more about the war and the characters. As a book should.
