Biography of a dynamic politician who led the fight for many reforms, such as direct election of senators, controls on railroads and utilities, and workers' rights. He bravely stood against "patriotic" sentiment in opposing U.S. entry into World War II. His partner in politics and life was his wife, Belle Case La Follette, who was the first woman to graduate from the University of Wisconsin's law school.

Unger writes with a clear and engaging style. She covers La Follette's personal struggles and family life as well as political history.

The University of Wisconsin Press has just brought out (summer 2008) a paperback edition.
