Gr 2–4—A fabulous compendium that leaves other monument books in the dust. Walker challenges readers to think
about how a monument reflects what we value as a culture. A scrapbook format, a blend of modern facts and
history, and delightful illustrations all stand out because of Walker's examination of the monuments through an
equitable lens.

National Monuments of the USA is a well-illustrated and intriguing informational text book that is inviting for readers of many ages to pick up and read. The book is organized by regions of the US and covers both humanmade (i.e. Stonewall, National Mall, Golden Gate Bridge, etc.) and natural monuments (i.e. John Day Fossil Bed, Mount St. Helens, etc.). Each section covers a different region of the US and allows the reader to learn about different monuments from those areas with short blurbs, illustrations, and details about some of the features. There are nods and inclusion of timely social justice topics, such as Tule Lake, Stonewall, Birmingham City Rights and Freedom Rides.

This book will fit nicely into a classroom or elementary school library, or children's bookshelf to pull out and read and browse. It is a fitting gift for a kid or even adult who loves National Parks and Monuments.
