- Terence de Vere White (1912-94) was a former Irish lawyer and writer. He was the literary editor of the Irish Times from 1961-77. He was a trustee of various organisations including the National Library of Ireland, the National Gallery, the Chester Beatty Library and was also a member of the Arts Council and of the Aos Dana.

The action takes place over a few months leading up to the 22 November 1920 outbreak of shootings and killing in the Irish Insurrection in Dublin.
