Richard Whitmore (1) (1933–)

A tragic tale about a man who barricaded himself into his home and became a hermit after suffering from untreated mental health problems. He became an object of curiosity and people would travel for miles to try to get a glimpse of him through his barred windows. He allowed occassional visitors into his squalid home but trusted very few, even believing that his brother was trying to cause his death. Charles Dickens was said to have met with Lucas and penned a story about him.

The sad, true story of a Victorian nobleman who becomes a hermit and descends into madness. Well illustrated with well researched documentation. Such a tragedy for the man and his family.
