I found the story that takes over half of this book, "Duke City Alchemist", to be fascinating -- I wanted more.

I found myself wondering if the "Mind Games" book alluded to in that story is real or fictional -- though I doubt that there is any shortage of similar material out there, probably of dubious quality, from the 70s and 80s.

Being born in the 1980s in Albuquerque, I find Willson's writing to have an interesting and nostalgic perspective on this particular place, whether or not it's intended as such.… (more)

I loved this book. Being a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a lover of sci-fi and that "edge of the world" feeling, this book skillfully pushed a lot of my buttons.

A unique "last person on Earth" story which travels in interesting directions.

It's been a while, so I can't remember completely clearly, but a man is meditating or doing some experiments on consciousness in a basement at the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque, and so manages to unwittingly survive the detonation of a weapon that manages to kill all humans, reducing them to piles of dust, while leaving all the structures intact. (Can't remember if it also kills plants and animals.)

The protagonist starts walking to discover what he can about what is left of the world.
