This is your basic nuts-and-bolts regimental monograph that contrasts Jeff Davis' 1st Mississippi Rifles with its sister unit the 2nd Mississippi, and examines the difference that Davis' competent (if dictatorial) leadership & political connections made. Apart from that units such as these can be seen as the predecessors of the volunteer regiments that were raised for service during the late unpleasantness of the 1860s.
