Plot Summary: All Yuna wants is to be American, have sleepovers with her friends and bring American lunches to school. She and her mom have a big fight about it and Yuna wishes upon her 1000 origami stars that she can go back to Korea. But then her halmoni in Korea dies and the family travels back to Korea immediately. As soon as they arrive, their older cousin whisks them away to halmoni's house while Yuna's parents join the funeral events. Yuna doesn't remember her cousin because the last time they visited was 5 years before. She also doesn't really remember her halmoni and now she's confused, she felt too Korean in American and too American in Korea. Where does she fit in? If her wish is what killed her halmoni, can she race against the clock to bring her back by making 1000 more paper stars?

Recurring Themes: death, loss, American, immigrant, family, wishes, grief, Korea, culture

Controversial Issues: none

Personal Thoughts: While I don't like magical realism, overall this book had insanely impressive emotions of grief, assimilation to American culture, and clashing with parents. I also thought the honesty of having negative thoughts about the person who died is a very real thing many people face.

Genre: realistic with fantastical element of her skin turning to paper

Pacing: fast, very few words
Characters: well developed, fight seems authentic

My new favorite series! This time Squash and Ginny travel to another magical land to find the Goblet of Infinity and as usual along the way they make new friends. But are all of them truly friends? Great story and awesome illustrations!

children's graphic novel (1st-4th grade) - cats, friendship, magic, adventure

Lots of kid appeal, very light reading--great for kids who are reading short chapter books. I love that one cat has one eye, but wish they could have had a bit more individual personality. Maybe in the next book?

The World According to Cats is a cute little book. I really enjoy Susie Yi's Cat and Cat webcomic. She's built an ongoing set of stories and personalities between four different cats (two inspired by her own and two fictional). I was looking forward to the same sweetness, humor, and personalities as her webcomic in this little coffee table book.

This little book is not what I expected. It's not bad, but it's ... missing that certain je ne sais quoi. The World According to Cats is not a continuation of her comic, although Mickey and Minnie do feature heavily. A couple of the comics included in here are ones I've seen, but they are all based around certain themes that try to explain how cats behave. If anything, The World According to Cats felt more like a children's book illustrated with Yi's cat comics. It's certainly the type of thing I would recommend to a young reader, but it's not for me. I think her series work and story arcs are much stronger in her webcomic, though I do not regret supporting her by buying this book.

I will be passing forward The World According to Cats to the next reader, hopefully one who is not already familiar with Yi's work and will discover her from it, especially with her other upcoming graphic novels and the recent book deal. I wish Yi all the best and much success.½
