Yokoi KIYOSHI

This book examines the popular art of Otsu-e, particularly pieces produced from the 1500s - 1700s. Otsu-e is an art form that emerged from within the commoners' class in Japan during the feudal age.

'The term Otsu-e (literally meaning Otsu picture) refers to paintings sold as souvenirs at Otsu, the last stage on the Tokaido Highway where many travellers used to buy souvenirs as the place was located near the capital, Kyoto. The term comes from the name of the place.'
