People/Characters Alexey

Alexey was a Yup'ik hired as a dog sled driver, hunter and trapper for the Jeanette expedition. When the members of the expedition split into three groups to take to their small boats, Alexey went with De Long's group. All of that group perished, but even as he weakened Alexey struggled to provide food for them. The US Congress later struck a medal in his honor.

Alexey was clearly not his Yup'ik name, and was presumably given to him by a non-native visiting the area.
