(Fictitious character) Doff Packer married at 18, but her marriage was cut short by the death of her husband, Hugh Packer in World War I. She owns a farm, on which she is raising her grand-niece and nephew, Billie (about 11) and Leo (aged 18). Before the book opens, Leo has been drafted and left for basic training.
