People/Characters Pongo Twistleton

Reginald Twistleton-Twistleton (sometimes just Twistleton) is better known to his friends as Pongo.  He is famous among the drones for the knockabout cross-talk act that he does with Cyril "Barmy" Fortheringay-Phipps at the annual smoking concert of the Drones Club.

He is also well known for falling in love at first sight, frequently with a young woman already engaged to someone else.

His chief appearances in Wodehouse's tales are as the reluctant companion of his madcap uncle Frederick Twistleton, 5th Earl of Ickenham.  Ickenham spends most of his time in the country under the watchful eye of his wife Jane, but when he breaks out, wild adventures ensue as he spreads his version of sweetness and light, inevitably dragging Pongo in.   The latter dreads this events: "The aspect of this young man was haggard.  His eyes glared wildly and he sucked at an empty cigarette holder."  (Young Men in Spats, "Uncle Fred Flits By")  This is Pongo, hearing that his Uncle Fred is coming. "As always, when fate had linked his movements with those of the head of the family, he was feeling like a man floating over Niagara Falls in a barrel."  (Uncle Fred in the Springtime)
