The crown fit. That was the problem.

Tomas Vey is a broke stage actor who makes a living mocking the king in a shabby lower-city theater. Then palace agents arrive with an unusual complaint: his imitation is too accurate.

The real King Alaric is dying, and the court needs him seen alive for one final public ceremony. Tomas is hired to wear the crown, say one sentence, and disappear with enough gold to change his life.

But when the king dies, the bells do not ring.

Instead, the court forces Tomas to continue the performance. Trapped inside a palace built on ceremony, secrecy, and carefully managed lies, Tomas begins making mistakes. He pardons a hungry boy. Opens forgotten petitions. Challenges corrupt nobles. Moves grain to the starving city.

The problem is that the false king starts ruling better than the real one ever did.

As the people begin to believe in him and the court scrambles to control him, Tomas must decide whether to keep surviving inside the lie or use one final performance to expose the truth.
