The main character in this series, set around the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, is Theodosia Throckmorton, and very unusual young lady.   She is able to detect, and deal with, curses and other magical phenomenon Theodosia's father and mother are a museum curator and an archeologist digging in Egypt, respectively.   Although her younger brother Henry is away at  school, Theodosia, with her cat Isis, is left pretty much to her own rather self-sufficient devices.   She has absorbed several ancient languages and a vast body of knowledge about ancient civilizations.   Much of her time is spend fighting the curses on relics sent home by her mother. Theodosia learns that an organization, the Serpents of Chaos, is bent on world domination through magical and mundane means.   They become her chief opponents, with Grandmother Throckmorton, bent on making Theodosia a  a conventional lady, as a second.   Theodosia eventually meets up with the Brotherhood of Chosen Keepers, opponents to the Serpents, who are astounded that she is so much more capable than they.
