In 1990 I wrote a romantic mystery which featured a black cat detective with an attitude, Familiar. My editor Harlequin Intrigue at the time was Tahti Carter. When Tahti read the book, she suggested that I turn Familiar into a series. And I did. For 17 books. Familiar, with his wisdom and skepticism about human intelligence, became one of the most popular characters I’ve ever created. His adventures have been translated into 18 languages and hundreds of thousands of copies of his books have been sold. I now introduce Trouble, son of Familiar, who has his own unique voice (think Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes). Trouble has inherited his father’s detective skills—and slight contempt of the slow-thinking bipeds. Some of my writer friends are joining in the adventure to give you their take on Trouble. The new series of books will be called Familiar Legacy. I’m thrilled to be back in this world with my wonderful black cat pals, Familiar and now Trouble. -Carolyn Haines (English, Unclassified)
