DescriptionsEdit Descriptions

Její pastorkyňa (Her Stepdaughter; commonly known as Jenůfa (listenⓘ)) is an opera in three acts by Leoš Janáček to a Czech libretto by the composer, based on the play Její pastorkyňa by Gabriela Preissová. It was first performed at the National Theatre, Brno on 21 January 1904. Composed between 1896 and 1902, it is among the first operas written in prose.

Jenůfa in its 1904 version formed the basis for all performances of the work in its first two years of stage history. Along with other people, Janáček himself made many changes to the original 1904 Brno version. Nowadays it is most frequently heard in the ‘Brno 1908’ version, the result of a series of revisions to the opera made by Janáček himself between 1906 and 1913.
