- Console-ing Passions: Television and Cultural Power serves as a major focus for cultural studies of television. Building on the annual Console-ing Passions conference, the series will examine television's significance as a form of cultural expression and a medium of social power. The books will address television as a deeply politicized social institution, and will encourage work that explores such issues as television's role in redefining community at the local, regional, national, and global levels; its elicitation and denial of queer pleasures; its sexualization and racialization of public and private spheres; its construction of historical consciousness; and its place in the spatial contexts of everyday life. The series will also explore how video artists and activists have forged a counter-television that generates alternative perspectives and pleasures.
