Asahi, a modern-day girl, is whisked away to a strange land, based on an earlier era in Japan. She is befriended a boy named Subaru, son of the most prominent family in the nearby village. He helps Asahi grow accustomed to the fact this is real, and to the customs of this other land. Subaru's mother takes an instant dislike to Asahi and arranges for her to be thrown in the lake as a sacrifice to a water dragon god! The dragon god is initially annoyed that Asahi is not more impressed by him, and his fellow gods take an interest. Surprisingly, the god takes a liking to Asahi and decided to make her his bride once she grows older. Asahi declines the honor, and the Water Dragon steals her voice to keep her from saying things he doesn't like. Subaru, on the other hand, wants to reclaim Asahi for the land.
