Another huge photograph has just been released for your viewing pleasure, a 40 Gigapixel photograph of the ancient Philosophical Library at the Strahov Monastery, Prague, Czech Republic. I keep on looking at these amazing huge images that are being produced in the past few years and realize how far we’ve come in a very short time. It really wasn’t that long ago that the idea of even a 100 megabyte image was thought provoking and on a few of my first web sites I was boasting of having 360 degree images that were all of 480 pixels high, enough to slow down your internet experience at the time.

This recently published photo of the ancient Philosophical Library at the Strahov Monastery is now the biggest interior photo in the world. The huge photograph has a total resolution of 40 gigapixels, or 40 billion pixels. As always with these huge images, the Strahov Monastery Philosophical Library is made up of 2,947 individual photographs rather than a single image.
The image was shot by photographer Jeffrey Martin over a period of five days. As can be seen from the sample images the detail is extraordinary with the lovely old books and the ceiling fresco showing amazing sharpness. A high quality print of this image would be 23 meters long and 12 meters tall.
