Are your $12,500 winnings from the high-limit baccarat table burning a hole in your pocket? Torn between a poker tournament buy-in and betting big on your team in the NBA Playoffs? Here’s a thought. How about spending that cache of cash on “An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations,” a three-volume First Octavo edition collection of “landmark work on the individual’s right to the free exercise of economic activity.”
Not so much? What if we said that this 1776 first edition is exceptionally rare. Still no?
Bauman Rare Books in the Shoppes at The Palazzo is filled with rare antiquarian and collectible books—most of them not as pricey, but all with an, ummm, story to tell.
The store opened in February 2008, replicating much of Bauman’s Madison Avenue flagship store, and including volumes of work from Chaucer, a first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses, a first edition of A Farewell to Arms signed by Hemingway, a first edition of Huck Finn, and an extremely rare first edition of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. Unique documents, including a letter signed by President Lincoln and a military document signed by Napoleon are also featured. Word has it, that a high-roller once plunked his winnings down on a copy of The Federalists Papers.
Whether or not old books is your thing—and even if you don’t have several thousand dollars to spend on such a thing, a trip to Bauman is interesting simply for the historical value. And won’t you feel so much better about yourself for getting a little culture between your dinner at CUT and dancing at LAVO?
Bauman's Rare Books is open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
