About My Library

The library of Daniel Maude, minister at Dover, New Hampshire, is documented in his will, dated 7 January 1654 and proved 26 January 1656: "wishing to leave such few books as I have for the use and benefit of such a one as may be fit to have improvement especially of those in the Hebrew tongue, but in case such a one be not had, to let them go to some of the next congregation as may have the use of them as York or Hampton because learning is so much out of relish with disuse, excepting one book titled Derpnosophistanom [Deipnosophistanom] which I want have left for Cambridge library, and my little Hebrew Bible for Mr. Brocke, or any inferior books for learning of Hebrew, or to read in learning"; "something I am indebted to Mr. Newegate about 7s. and 0d. [?] to Mr. Usher for some books which I desire may be returned to them"; "one thing there is of some greater importance which is a little tractate wrapped up in my desk which I would have committed to Mr. Brock to put into the hands of Mr. Davenport who as I heard is intended to go for England that he would peruse, and for putting it forth I would leave it to his wise & godly ordering of which I think there is a truth of God in, & some benefit to redound to some by"; "there is a book of Mr. Norton's which is entitled The Orthodox Evangelist which I would have my sister Cotton to have – and another book I borrowed of my brother Cotton which is to come to his son Seaborne"; "some others against Antichristian Idolatry which I shall leave upon [illegible] for Sara that is with me I should desire to that which she have received full satisfaction when her time is out which will be about the 7 of the next month, and a little book which was my wife's & a cheese in the closet which Mrs. Miller[?] brought me last week".

About Me

Daniel Maude (1586-1656) was born and raised in Halifax, Yorkshire. He took his B.A. and M.A. degrees from Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1607 and 1610 before emigrating in 1635 aboard the James of Bristol, sharing ministerial studies on the crossing with Rev. Richard Mather. He settled first at Boston, where he served as schoolmaster, before removing to Dover in 1643 to serve as the town's minister after the departure of Thomas Larkham.

He married (at least) twice: by 1643 to Mary Bonner, and second to an unknown woman who predeceased him. Anderson suggests given his age that he had perhaps been married in England but this is not entirely clear.
