It is not a glorification of combat but an honest testimony of overcoming adversity and finding purpose through discipline and service.

The author was raised in Atlanta during the time of segregation. He lived in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. As a child, he knew that there had to be a better way of living, and he decided that the military was his way out. As a child, he dreamed of being a soldier and finally, he made that dream come true.
