About My Library

Okato and District Historical Society was founded in 1994 to document the history of the Coastal Taranaki region of New Zealand. Our rohe (area of interest) extends from Tapuae stream (north of Ōakura) to Ōkahu stream (South of Rahotū) and from Maunga Taranaki to the sea.

We have a collection of more than 600 books and periodicals covering local history, general New Zealand history, te ao Māori and genealogy.

We also have a collection of more than 12,000 photographs, and hold the archives of 30 local organisations.

Our history room in Cumming St, Ōkato is open to the public on Wednesdays or by appointment.
