As a general guide, my ratings reflect how much I enjoyed a book, rather than 'how good a book is', if that makes sense (with apologies to Virginia Woolf and James Joyce.)
A rough guide:
Five stars: My favourites. What more can I say?
4 1/2 stars, Not quite up there with the very best, but a great book, and highly recommendable.
Anything four stars or over, I'd happily recommend to myself if I happened to meet me walking down the street.
Three stars is enjoyable enough, worth reading... but no great shakes.
Two stars or less and I would have better spent the time reading something else.
One star: Well at least you've written a book!
